In one sentence

In 2004 I ran usability testing of online banking for Volkswagen Bank Direct: among the first lab usability studies in Poland and probably the first in the Polish financial sector.

Context

In 2004 the term "UX" barely existed in Poland, and website design in agencies came down to "it has to look nice". At the argonauts agency I introduced design based on observing users instead of on opinions.

What I did

I set up a usability lab in an advertising agency. I ran lab studies of prototypes of a transactional e-banking interface for Volkswagen Bank Direct. Participants carried out real banking tasks on the prototype, and we watched where they got lost. Sessions were observed in the lab and recorded.

Outcome: design problems were found and fixed early, before they reached implementation, and the next version of the prototype was based on the research results.

Why it matters today

This project starts the line the whole profile follows: replacing opinion with evidence. In 2004 the evidence was watching a user work on a prototype instead of the creative director's say-so. Today it is a success criterion set before measurement instead of a presentation with a demo. Same mechanism, different technology.
